Journeys into Justice is a book about collaborative interfaith movements that have been successful. Interfaith movements in the U.S. have bridged the differences and brought together Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish faith communities over the years to work for greater social justice. In more recent years, the Islamic faith community has begun to join in the interfaith movements for dialogue and for collaborative social justice action.
Interfaith movements build upon deeply held religious values that support social equity, human dignity, equal rights, mutual sharing, social solidarity, truth-telling, fair distribution of wealth, the sanctity of life, and checks and balances on power. Interfaith movements encourage and promote diverse groups to find common ground, common values, promote cooperation, and create more collaborative processes for unity, peace, and justice in society.
Interfaith movements tend to arise when established traditional political processes have failed to constructively deal with major human social problems. Often in the face of great opposition, interfaith movements come together to create aggregated people power focused on protest and positive solutions with sufficient force to achieve paradigm shifts and new social/economic arrangements of lasting value for the common good.
Interfaith movements that unite diverse religious groups have played a major role in ending slavery, promoting worker justice, providing education for marginalized people, building hospitals, empowering the civil rights movement, extending voting rights, creating affordable housing, feeding the hungry, ending wars, and building peace.
This book describes a number of collaborative interfaith movements that have achieved positive accomplishments of the common good. These interfaith movements have achieved increases in the federal and state minimum wages, built thousands of units of affordable rental housing, created economic development through thousands of new small businesses among minority groups, and worked relentlessly to end discrimination against immigrant peoples.
